Saving Elderly Eye Sight and Protecting Against Cancer - Omega 3 Fatty Acids

New Found Resons to Add Omege 3 Fatty Acids to Your Diet

Macular Degeneration (AMD) is the main cause of poor vision and blindness in the elderly population. A recent study done by the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine found that individuals who consumed fish containing omega 3 fatty acids at least once a week were 50% less likely to contract the condition of Macular Degeneration than those who did not. The fish consumption would include two 3 ounce servings of tuna, salmon, mackerel. Unfortunately, the medical team did not investigate whether omega 3 fatty acid supplements would give the same results.

In another study done by the Karolinska Institute in Sweden, 90,000 women were sent questionnaires in conjunction with their annual mammograms. This study was started in the 1990s. The findings of this study showed that the women who ate at least one portion of omega 3 fatty acid containing fish reduced their chances of contracting renal (kidney) cancer by 74%, opposed to those who added no fish to their diet. This is the first complete study relating the consumption of omega 3 containing fish related to renal cancer.
